About Michael

Michael Hartung

Michael has been an avid photographer for over seventeen years. He purchased his first 35mm camera when he was sixteen. As he spent hours upon hours making photographs, he fell in love with photography. He pursued his passion as his major in college. Upon graduating, he opened his photography business.

He enjoys working in various genres of fine art photography including: portraiture, nature/landscape, and still life. His photographs have been featured in magazines, books, calendars, and galleries. His work is also held in private collections.

A major change in his photographic career began with his nieces and nephew. He loved photographing them so much that he decided to specialize in children's portrait photography. Because children constantly surprise and inspire him, they have become his favorite subjects.

Artist Statement

This is why I became a photographer: to see the world without labels – each individual thing for its uniqueness – and to fill my life with awe and wonder so I could share that with others.

For me, photography is not merely a technical craft for documentation; rather, it is an emotionally responsive medium which allows me to capture and communicate the personality, emotions, and expression of my subjects.

Children are naturally so spontaneous and genuine that it is a shame to force them into formal poses. I prefer to create a playful environment that allows them to be themselves. I find this provides the best and most creative photographic opportunities.

My nieces and nephew, my initial inspiration for children's portraiture, are growing up so quickly. Unless I capture who they are at each stage, something is lost, forgotten. I have made many photographs of them that my family and I cherish. I enjoy doing the same for my clients: using my artistic and photographic skills to create lasting images of their children to display on their walls. What artwork could add more warmth to your home than portraits inspired by your own children?
